Youth sports tryout checklist for parents
Tryouts move fast and every program runs them differently. Use this checklist to prepare your athlete, ask the right questions and compare offers calmly.
Before the tryout
Confirm the details directly with the program — dates and age cut-offs change from season to season.
- Age group or birth-year cut-off your athlete falls into
- Registration deadline and whether pre-registration is required
- Tryout fee, if any, and whether it is refundable
- How many sessions and whether attendance at all of them is expected
- When and how results will be communicated
What to bring
Pack the night before so the morning is about the athlete, not the gear.
- Sport-specific footwear and protective equipment
- Water and a small snack
- Any registration confirmation or required forms
- A layer for changing weather at outdoor venues
Questions to ask about the team
A place on a roster is a season-long commitment. Ask before you accept.
- Total season cost, including uniforms, travel and tournaments
- Practice frequency and typical locations
- Travel expectations and how far away games usually are
- Coaching qualifications and safeguarding policies
- Playing-time philosophy
After the tryout
If you receive more than one offer, compare total cost, time commitment and coaching fit side by side. If your athlete isn't selected, ask whether there is a development squad or a later intake.
Common questions
- How early should we look for tryouts?
- Many programs announce tryouts several weeks to a few months before the season. Checking regularly and saving searches helps you avoid missing a window.
- Is it normal to pay for a tryout?
- Some programs charge a fee and some don't. Always confirm the amount and refund policy with the program directly.
